John Deere 5126.04 – ECU: Sensor Supply #8 Voltage Out of Range Low

Issue description

The 5-volt reference supply circuit (Circuit #8) has dropped below its lower acceptable limit, typically caused by a short circuit to ground. Multiple sensors share this 5V supply circuit, so a short in any one of these sensors or their shared wiring harness will pull the voltage down for the entire circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the DEF pump connector for fluid intrusion or corrosion (a highly common failure point on FT4 engines that shorts the 5V circuit).

  2. Isolate the shorted sensor by turning the key ON, monitoring the active 5126.04 code, and unplugging sensors on Circuit #8 one at a time (DPF Pressure, DOC/DPF Temp, SCR Temp, DEF Pressure, Exhaust Pressure, Engine Oil Pressure).

  3. Inspect the wiring harness routing to the exhaust aftertreatment system and engine block for chafing, melting, or pinched wires shorting to chassis ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Ensure the machine is powered down and disconnect the battery before repairing electrical circuits.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If chafed or melted wires were found during the visual inspection, repair the damaged section of the harness and secure it away from high-heat exhaust components.

  3. Replace Faulty Sensor

    If unplugging a specific sensor restored the 5V circuit, replace that sensor.

  4. Address DEF Pump Leaks

    If the DEF pump connector is full of fluid, the pump has failed internally. Replace the DEF pump (use updated 'DZ' part numbers, avoiding older 'RE' numbers). Clean the harness connector thoroughly with electronic contact cleaner and allow it to dry.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use John Deere Service Advisor (or a compatible diagnostic tool) to clear the ECU fault codes.

  6. Test Operation

    Start the engine and verify that the 5126.04 code does not return and that the engine is no longer in a derated state.
