John Deere 516123.09 – CCU (Main Control Module / Central Control Unit): LIN BUS Communication Issue With Battery Cut Off Relay Main Control Module (CCU)
Issue description
This diagnostic trouble code is generated when the control unit detects a communication loss on the LIN BUS network specifically tied to the battery cut-off relay, or a power-down circuit fault. The system essentially loses its ability to verify the status of the battery disconnect circuit, which can result from loose connections, battery terminal issues, or a failed relay in the power-down circuit. When this code is active, the tractor may exhibit limited or no functionality to protect the electrical system.

Check the cause
Inspect the main battery terminals and connections for tightness, cleanliness, corrosion, or physical damage that could interrupt the power-down circuit.
Load-test the battery to ensure it is in good condition and providing adequate, stable voltage to the CCU.
Verify the integrity of the wiring harness between the CCU and the Battery Cut Off Relay, looking for chafed wires, loose pins at the relay socket, or moisture intrusion.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.
Clean Terminals
Clean any corrosion from the battery posts and the relay sockets in the main electrical panel/fuse box.
Inspect the Relay
Locate the Battery Cut Off Relay (often designated as K56 in John Deere schematics). Check for signs of internal shorting, burnt pins, or water ingress.
Replace the Relay
If the wiring and battery test good but the communication fault persists, remove the old relay and plug the direct-replacement OEM relay into the existing socket.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 516123.09 code. Verify that the tractor powers up and down correctly without triggering the code.
Parts you might need
(2)Battery Cut Off Relay
AL1764044-pin heavy-duty power cut-off relay with DIN 72552 standard terminal designations. Mounts in the tractor's main electrical panel. Fits 6M, 6020, 6030, and 7030 series tractors. Aftermarket Cross-Reference: 59326.
Main Control Module (CCU)
Part number varies heavily by exact VIN/Cab configuration. If the relay and wiring are intact, the CCU itself may require replacement or reprogramming by a dealer.
