516454.04

John Deere 516454.04 – SCO (Secondary Hydraulic Control Unit) or SCU (Deluxe Hydraulic Control Unit): Calibration Issue with a hydraulic control valve

Issue description

The control unit cannot verify the physical position of the valve spool or hitch actuator against its commanded electronic position, meaning the system must be recalibrated or a sensor has failed.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R

  • 8320R
  • 8335R
  • 8345R
  • 8370R
  • 8400R

Check the cause

  1. Hydraulic Oil Level & Temperature: Ensure the hydraulic oil is at the correct level. The oil must be heated to operating temperature before calibration.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the SCV 10 slice or the front hitch position sensor for damage, corrosion, or accumulated debris.

  3. Check for Related Codes: Look for voltage or communication codes (e.g., SCO supply voltage problems or CAN bus missing messages). Resolve those first.

Repair steps

  1. Warm Up the Tractor

Start the engine and drive the tractor to heat the transmission and hydraulic oil to operating temperature. Shift through gears and operate the hydraulics to eliminate cold spots.

  2. Prepare for Calibration

Park the tractor. Do not operate any other SCVs, the air conditioning compressor, or the steering/brakes during the procedure (the AC blower can remain on).

  3. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR or a compatible multi-brand tool (like TEXA Off-Highway) to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  4. Run Calibration

Navigate to the SCO/SCU module and select the calibration procedure for 'SCV 10' or 'Front Hitch'.

  5. Follow Prompts

The system will perform an automated air purge and stroke the valve. Do not touch the SCV levers or move the tractor during this process.

  6. Verify or Replace

If the calibration completes successfully, clear the code. If the calibration fails repeatedly, the position sensor on the SCV/Hitch or the SCV actuator itself is mechanically faulty and must be replaced, followed by a new calibration.
