Issue description

The system has detected that the temperature reading for the Selective Control Valve (SCV) 6 stepper motor is too low. In J1939 standard diagnostics, an FMI of ".04" typically indicates "Voltage Below Normal or Shorted to Low Source," meaning the controller is seeing a voltage drop on the temperature sensor circuit that translates to an abnormally low temperature reading.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes such as 516705.18 (SCV 6 Valve Low Voltage), which can indicate a broader supply voltage issue to the module rather than just a temperature sensor failure.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness and connectors going to the SCV 6 stepper motor at the rear hydraulic block. Look for rubbed wires, corrosion, or a short to ground, which directly causes an FMI .04 (low voltage/short) reading.

  3. Operational Check: Use the tractor's diagnostic monitor (Command Center) or John Deere Service Advisor to perform an interactive operational check and calibration of the E-SCV 6 Stepper Motor.

  4. Hydraulic Oil Temperature: Verify that the tractor's general hydraulic oil temperature is reading correctly on the vehicle monitor. If the main hydraulic oil temperature is also failing, the issue may be systemic rather than isolated to the SCV 6 stepper motor.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

    Shut off the engine. Relieve all hydraulic system pressure by moving the SCV levers/controls through all positions. Safety Warning: Escaping high-pressure fluid can penetrate the skin. Never disconnect lines under pressure.

  2. Locate SCV 6

    Identify the SCV 6 valve slice on the rear hydraulic stack (usually the outermost or specifically numbered valve on the rear chassis block).

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the SCV 6 stepper motor.

  4. Remove the Stepper Motor/Valve

    Depending on the exact failure, you can unbolt the stepper motor from the top of the SCV valve body. If replacing the whole slice, disconnect the hydraulic lines (cap them to prevent contamination) and remove the tie-bolts holding the SCV slice to the hydraulic stack.

  5. Install New Parts

    Mount the new stepper motor (or complete SCV valve assembly) using the OEM torque specifications.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical connector.

  7. Calibration

    Power on the tractor and use the diagnostic system to clear the 516705.04 code. You must perform an SCV calibration procedure so the Rear Chassis Module (SCC) can learn the end-stops of the new stepper motor.

  8. Leak Test

    Start the tractor, actuate SCV 6, and check for any hydraulic leaks.
