The controller monitors the operating temperature and electrical resistance of the rear hitch stepper motor to prevent damage and ensure accurate hydraulic valve actuation. A "Too Cold" condition (.01) typically indicates an open circuit, extremely high resistance in the wiring harness, or a failed internal temperature sensor/thermistor within the stepper motor assembly, rather than an actual environmental weather issue.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the HV1 controller to the rear hitch rockshaft control valve for chafed wires, rodent damage, or pinched lines.

   Disconnect the plug at the stepper motor and check for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion, which can cause high resistance and trigger a false 'cold' (open circuit) reading.

   Look for related HV1 codes that might indicate a total component failure, such as 520258.00 (Over Heating), 520259.02 (Position Sensor Issue), or 520260.00 (High Amps).

   Test the resistance across the stepper motor terminals with a multimeter. An infinite reading (OL) confirms an internal open circuit, necessitating replacement.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent short circuits.

   Locate the Component

   Locate the rear hitch rockshaft control valve block at the rear of the tractor. The electric stepper motor is mounted directly to this hydraulic valve block.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the stepper motor. Remove the retaining bolts/screws securing the stepper motor to the hydraulic valve block. Carefully pull the stepper motor straight out, ensuring no dirt or debris falls into the hydraulic valve body.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new stepper motor with clean hydraulic oil. Seat the new stepper motor into the valve block and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. After replacing a hitch stepper motor, you must perform a Rear Hitch Calibration (often via the tractor's CommandCenter display or John Deere Service ADVISOR) so the HV1 controller can learn the new motor's end-stops and position limits.
