520259.02

John Deere 520259.02 – HV1: Rear Hitch Stepper Motor Position Sensor Issue

Issue description

A plausibility error or signal failure regarding the linear position sensor that monitors the stepper motor on the rear hitch valve. The controller cannot accurately determine the physical position of the rear hitch valve, resulting in the rear hitch being disabled or entering a limited-operation limp mode.

Applies to these machines

  • 5090M
  • 5100M
  • 5100MH
  • 5100ML
  • 5115M
  • 5065M
  • 5075M
  • 5085M
  • 5090R
  • 5100R
  • 5115ML
  • 5115R
  • 5125R
  • 5130M

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the power using the key switch or external control lever to attempt a system recovery and clear the code

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the HV1 control unit and the rear hitch valve linear position sensor for chafed wires, short circuits, or disconnected plugs

  3. Check the sensor connector for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion

  4. Use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR or Jaltest) to read live voltage values of the position sensor while commanding the hitch to move. If voltage is out of calibration or dead, the sensor has failed

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the rear hitch valve block assembly at the rear of the tractor. The linear position sensor is mounted directly to the hitch valve to monitor the stepper motor.

  3. Remove the Faulty Sensor

Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Unbolt and carefully remove the linear position sensor from the valve body.

  4. Inspect the Valve

Ensure the stepper motor and valve spool are not mechanically binding, which could cause false sensor readings. If the valve block requires disassembly, ensure you have a replacement hitch valve gasket on hand.

  5. Install the New Sensor

Mount the new linear position sensor (RE282919) and torque the fasteners to OEM specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  6. Configuration and Calibration

Perform a 'Hitch Valve Control (HV1) Configuration and Calibration' to allow the HV1 module to learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum travel limits.
