520425.07

John Deere 520425.07 – Front Chassis Module (SFA): Received CAN Bus Messages, High Error Rate

Issue description

Triggered when the error counter for the vehicle's CAN (Controller Area Network) Bus reaches an unusually high level, indicating persistent communication errors within the CAN Bus network.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6110M
  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M
  • 6195M
  • 210L EP Tractor Loader
  • 310K Backhoe Loader

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the CAN Bus network wiring for physical defects such as chafed/damaged wires, loose connections, or corrosion at the harness connectors.

  2. Visually inspect around the batteries and alternator for damage, and check the module's power supply fuses (e.g., check fuse F30 for the SFA module).

  3. Ensure that proper termination resistors are installed and functioning at both ends of the CAN bus network.

  4. Check for unshielded sources of electrical interference near the CAN bus network.

  5. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR (or equivalent diagnostic software) to monitor CAN Bus traffic and identify sources of errors, such as conflicts from incorrectly configured devices or a specific module spamming the network.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring/Connectors

If physical damage or corrosion is found during the diagnostic checks, repair or replace the compromised wiring harness or connectors.

  2. Replace Faulty Network Components

If a termination resistor is found to be out of spec (typically should read ~60 ohms across the network when powered down), replace it.

  3. Isolate Malfunctioning Devices

If the network is overloaded, unplug modules one by one while monitoring the error rate on the diagnostic software to isolate the malfunctioning device.

  4. Update Software

Make sure the control software for the SFA and other modules is updated to the latest version to address any known CAN message processing bugs.

  5. Reset and Verify

After resolving the underlying physical or software issues, reset the error counter using diagnostic software. Monitor the CAN Bus operation during a test drive to ensure error rates remain low and normal function is restored.
