Issue description

This code triggers when the control module detects an erratic, missing, or out-of-range signal from the sensor that monitors the angle and position of the front loader bucket.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Calibration Codes: Look for companion codes like 520531.13 or 520531.14, which indicate that the Front Loader Bucket Position Sensor simply needs to be recalibrated rather than replaced.

  2. Visual Inspection of the Sensor and Linkage: The sensor is typically mounted near the right-hand bucket cylinder or loader linkage. Inspect the sensor, the sensor assembly tube, and the linkage for physical damage, bending, or debris interference.

  3. Harness and Connector Check: Inspect the wiring harness routing down the loader boom to the Front Chassis Module. Check the Metri-Pack connectors at the sensor for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  4. Live Data Test: Using the tractor's CommandCenter display or John Deere Service ADVISOR, monitor the live data from the bucket position sensor. Slowly roll the bucket back and forth to see if the sensor voltage drops out or spikes erratically, which confirms an internal sensor failure.

Repair steps

  1. Safely Position the Machine

    Lower the loader boom and place the bucket flat on the ground to remove all mechanical tension.

  2. Relieve Hydraulic Pressure

    Turn off the engine. Move the electronic joystick through all axes (forward, back, left, right) to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the loader cylinders.

  3. Disconnect the Sensor

    Locate the bucket position sensor on the loader linkage/cylinder and disconnect its Metri-Pack wiring harness connector.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket. If the sensor assembly tube or linkage is damaged, remove the connecting hardware to replace the tube as well.

  5. Install the New Part

    Mount the new rotary position sensor (and linkage if applicable) and secure the bolts. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  6. Perform Sensor Calibration (Crucial)

    A new sensor will not work correctly out of the box. You must navigate to the Return to Position (RTP) / Loader Technology run page on the CommandCenter display (or use Service ADVISOR) to perform the Bucket Position Sensor Calibration. You will be prompted to set the bucket to specific angles (e.g., flat on the ground, maximum dump, maximum rollback) and save the set points so the module can learn the new sensor's voltage limits.
