John Deere 520542.04 – Rear Chassis Module / VLC (Vehicle Load Center): CAN BUS Voltage Low
Issue description
This indicates a communication failure on the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus where the voltage has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold. This is typically caused by a short to ground, a broken wire, a damaged CAN terminator resistor, or a poor ground connection that disrupts the signal to the module.

Check the cause
CAN Bus Resistance Test: With the tractor off and the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to check the resistance between pins C and D of the diagnostic connector. A healthy system will read 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one of the CAN termination resistors is missing, damaged, or there is an open circuit. If it reads "OL" (Open Loop) or a very high number, both resistors are missing/damaged, or the main harness is broken.
Ground Wire Inspection: A highly documented issue on 6R tractors is a broken or loose ground wire eyelet causing intermittent communication loss to the rear chassis controller. Wiggle the battery cables and ground wires while monitoring the CAN bus voltage (or listening for dash beeps) to see if the connection is loose.
Visual Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harnesses under the cab and near the rear chassis for physical damage, particularly from rodents (mice damage is a common culprit).
CANbus Connector Check: Check the physical CANbus connectors. These are known failure points on the 6030 and 6R series tractors and can cause random communication error codes.

Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the battery before performing electrical repairs to prevent data loss or module damage.
Repair Ground Connections (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic check revealed a broken ground wire eyelet (commonly Wire #0330A): Strip back the damaged section of the wire. Crimp on a new, appropriately sized eyelet terminal. Apply heat shrink tubing over the crimp to seal out moisture. Reattach the ground wire securely to the terminal.
Replace CAN Terminator (If Applicable)
If the resistance test failed (120 ohms or OL), locate the faulty CAN terminator (often located in the roof or at the end of the harness near the rear chassis) and plug in a new terminator.
Replace CAN Connectors (If Applicable)
If the CANbus connectors are corroded or damaged, splice in replacement connectors.
Reboot and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the machine on to force a "cold boot" of the system, which flushes temporary memory. Clear the inactive codes using your diagnostic display and test drive the tractor to ensure it no longer drops communication or slips into neutral.
