John Deere 520543.04 – CCU / OIC / CSC / AIC / TEC: Vehicle CAN Bus Low Circuit Voltage Low
Issue description
Voltage on the CAN- (CAN Low) communication wire has dropped below acceptable operating parameters, indicating that the CAN- lead has a short to ground.

Check the cause
Reboot the System: Cycle the ignition OFF and then ON to see if the code is a temporary software glitch.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the control unit (CCU, OIC, or CSC) and the CAN bus wiring harness for physical damage, loose connections, chafing against the chassis, or corrosion.
Voltage Test: Using a digital multimeter, probe the CAN- lead. A healthy CAN- wire should read around 2.5V. A reading near 0V confirms a hard short to ground.
Module Isolation Test: Disconnect the modules on the affected CAN network one at a time while monitoring the CAN- voltage. If the voltage jumps back to normal after unplugging a specific module, that module has an internal short. If all modules are unplugged and the short remains, the wiring harness is pinched or grounded to the chassis.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the electrical system to prevent further module damage.
Repair the Harness (If applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed or pinched wire in the CAN harness, cut out the damaged section. Splice in a new section of twisted-pair CAN wire using OEM-approved, weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors.
Replace the Module (If applicable)
If the isolation test proved a control module (such as the CCU or OIC) is internally shorted, unbolt the module, disconnect the harness headers, and install a replacement unit.
Software Update/Calibration
If a new module is installed, it may require flashing or an EEPROM configuration update via John Deere Service ADVISOR to match the machine's VIN and equipment loadout.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the diagnostic monitor or Service ADVISOR to clear the stored 520543.04 code. Verify the code does not return.
