John Deere 520958.31 – TIP: Speed Selection Invalid
Issue description
The transmission control software has blocked a gear shift because the requested speed or gear selection is not permitted under the current operating conditions. This is often due to a maximum speed limit setting stored in the CommandCenter display, or because the transmission's startup checks were incomplete.

Check the cause
Check CommandCenter Settings: Verify the transmission pages in the display to see if a custom speed limit, custom band, or restricted auto-mode setting is currently active and preventing the shift.
Operator Presence: Ensure the operator is firmly seated.
Startup Sequence: Verify that the tractor was not shifted into gear too quickly after key-on.
Check for Concurrent Codes: Look for active wheel speed sensor faults or Cab Control Unit programming errors.
Repair steps
Attempt Vehicle Recovery
Immediately return the transmission shift lever to the "Park" position.
Cycle the Selector
Cycle the gear selector out of Park and back in to see if the invalid selection clears.
Power Cycle
If the code remains active, shut off the engine and cycle the key switch to power down the tractor completely. Wait 30 seconds, then restart the engine to allow the TIP module to perform a fresh boot and complete its startup checks.
Reconfigure Display Settings
Access the CommandCenter display, navigate to the Transmission settings, and clear or adjust any restrictive speed limits that are conflicting with the operator's shift commands.
Software Update
If the code cannot be cleared by cycling power and adjusting the display settings, the Cab Control Unit or TIP module may have corrupted programming. Contact a John Deere dealer to re-flash or update the transmission software using Service ADVISOR.
