John Deere 520959.14 – TIQ / TIP: Operator Not Seated During Speed Selection Change

Issue description

The transmission control system is detecting a commanded gear shift or speed selection change, but the system is not receiving a valid closed-circuit signal from the seat switch (Operator Presence Switch) to verify that the operator is actually sitting in the seat.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the operator is fully and firmly seated in the seat during operation

  2. Perform a soft reset by cycling the tractor's key switch off and back on

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector located directly under the seat cushion for disconnected wires, pinched cables, or corrosion

  4. Disconnect the seat switch and use a multimeter to test for continuity. The switch should change states when weight is applied to the seat cushion

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Access the Switch

Tilt the seat forward or remove the bottom seat cushion (depending on the seat model) to access the operator presence switch mounted in the seat base.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical pigtail connector from the switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

For twist-mount switches: Push in slightly and twist the switch counterclockwise to release it from the mounting hole. For bolt-on switches: Remove the two mounting bolts/screws securing the tabs.

  5. Install the New Switch

Insert the new switch and twist clockwise to lock it in place (or bolt it down).

  6. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the wiring harness. Sit in the seat, turn the key switch on, and attempt a speed selection change to verify the 520959.14 code has cleared and the transmission shifts normally.
