John Deere 521001.03 – Hitch Control Unit (HCU) / Hitch Control Controller (HCC): Rear Hitch Control Valve Circuit Voltage High
Issue description
The control module is detecting a higher-than-expected voltage in the circuit responsible for raising the rear hitch, which typically points to an open circuit, a short to power in the wiring harness, or an internal failure of the valve's solenoid/stepper motor.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the Rear Hitch Raise Valve (or Stepper Motor) and its wiring harness for physical damage, loose connector pins, or corrosion.
Test the wiring circuit between the HCU/HCC and the rear hitch control valve for a short to power or an open circuit.
Verify if the hitch calibration process can be executed, as a voltage fault can sometimes be triggered by a loss of calibration or configuration error.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the battery or turn off the master disconnect switch before servicing electrical/hydraulic components.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or corroded connectors at the hitch valve, repair or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Valve/Motor
If the wiring is intact and the voltage is still reading high (indicating an internal open/short in the component), remove and replace the Rear Hitch Raise Valve or the Hitch Stepper Motor.
Reassemble and Power Up
Reconnect the wiring harness and restore battery power.
Calibrate the Hitch
Accurate calibration of the Rear Hitch Raise Valve is essential for proper hitch control. Use the tractor's CommandCenter display or John Deere Service Advisor tool to perform the Rear Hitch Calibration procedure.
Clear Codes
Clear the 521001.03 fault code from the HCU/HCC memory and test the rear hitch by raising and lowering it to ensure optimal performance.
