John Deere 521001.04 – Hitch Control Unit (HCU) / Hitch Control Controller (HCC): Rear Hitch Control Valve Circuit Voltage Low
Issue description
The control module is detecting a voltage drop below the minimum acceptable threshold on the circuit that commands the rear hitch to raise. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, a corroded connector, or an internal failure (short) within the raise valve solenoid or stepper motor coil.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the raise valve solenoid/stepper motor for chafing, pinch points, or melted insulation.
Disconnect the harness at the valve and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.
Check for continuity between the valve connector and the HCU/HCC module, and test the circuit for a short to ground.
Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the raise valve solenoid/stepper motor. Infinite resistance (open circuit) or 0 ohms (dead short) indicates component failure.
Attempt to run a Rear Hitch Calibration via the tractor's CommandCenter display, as severe calibration drift can sometimes trigger voltage anomalies.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the rear hitch completely to relieve hydraulic pressure, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Access the Valve
Locate the rear hitch control valve assembly at the rear of the machine. Clean the area around the valve thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Disconnect Electronics
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty raise valve solenoid or stepper motor.
Remove the Component
Depending on the specific valve design, either remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, or unbolt the stepper motor/valve cartridge from the main valve block.
Install the New Part
Lubricate the O-rings on the new valve/solenoid with clean hydraulic oil. Install it into the block and torque to OEM specifications (do not overtighten solenoid retaining nuts, as this can bind the internal spool).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Turn the key to the ON position. Clear the 521001.04 fault code using the tractor's diagnostic menu. You must perform the Rear Hitch Calibration procedure so the HCU/HCC can learn the electrical characteristics (deadband and gain) of the new valve.
