Issue description

The control module detects that the electrical current flowing to the rear hitch raise valve solenoid has dropped below the minimum expected threshold. This typically points to an open circuit, a disconnected wiring harness, a broken wire, or a failed (open) solenoid coil, causing the rear hitch to be disabled or fail to raise.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running between the HCU and the Rear Hitch Raise Solenoid for disconnected plugs, corrosion, or physical damage.

  2. Unplug the connector at the Rear Hitch Raise Solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. An infinite reading (OL) indicates an internally open/failed coil.

  3. Perform a circuit continuity test on the power and ground wires from the HCU harness connector to the solenoid connector to rule out a broken wire.

  4. Verify that the HCU is receiving proper voltage by checking associated fuses (e.g., Fuse F30) and ensuring the battery/alternator is supplying adequate power.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, repair the harness or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

    If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut/clip holding the solenoid coil to the rear hitch raise valve cartridge. Slide the old coil off, slide the new coil on, and secure it.

  4. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the tractor's diagnostic monitor or John Deere Service ADVISOR to clear the 521001.05 code.

  5. Perform Calibration

    After replacing the solenoid or repairing the circuit, you must perform the HCU Calibration for the Rear Hitch Raise Valve. This teaches the HCU the new minimum and maximum current deadbands for the replacement solenoid to ensure smooth hitch operation.
