John Deere 521002.05 – HCC / HCU: Rear Hitch Lower Solenoid Current Low

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical current flowing to the solenoid responsible for lowering the rear hitch is below the expected or specified range. This typically points to an open electrical circuit, a faulty wiring connection, or a failed solenoid coil. As a result, the rear hitch will generally fail to lower automatically, though it may still operate in manual mode.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor to verify if the active DTC reappears, as temporary communication glitches can trigger the code

  2. Inspect around the batteries and alternator for any signs of damage or accumulated debris that could cause voltage irregularities

  3. Verify the hydraulic oil level is adequate, as low fluid can trigger secondary hydraulic faults

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and the specific connector leading to the rear hitch lower/return solenoid for wire connector faults, corrosion, backed-out pins, or physical damage

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the hitch (if possible via manual mode), turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the rear hitch control valve block (typically mounted at the rear of the chassis) and identify the 'Lower' (or 'Return') solenoid.

  3. Test the Circuit

    Disconnect the electrical connector at the lower solenoid. Use a multimeter to test the wiring harness for continuity and ensure there are no shorts or open circuits between the solenoid connector and the HCU/HCC module.

  4. Test the Solenoid

    Measure the resistance (ohms) across the pins of the lower solenoid coil. If the resistance is out of specification (indicating an open coil), the solenoid is faulty.

  5. Replace Components

    If the solenoid is faulty, replace the rear hitch lower solenoid. On some valve blocks, the solenoid cannot be serviced separately, requiring the replacement of the entire Rear Hitch Control Valve assembly.

  6. Recalibrate the Hitch

    After replacing the solenoid or valve, you must have a John Deere dealer (or use Service ADVISOR software) to perform an HCU/Rear Lift Return Valve calibration before the hitch will function properly in automatic mode.
