521002.06

John Deere 521002.06 – HCU: Rear Hitch Control Valve High Amps

Issue description

The control module has detected an abnormally high electrical current (amperage) flowing to the rear hitch lower solenoid/valve. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internally shorted solenoid coil that is drawing too much power.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle tractor power by restarting the engine to verify if the active DTC reappears, as resetting communication messages may clear the code

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the HCU to the rear hitch lower solenoid for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or corrosion (indicating a short to ground)

  3. Use a multimeter to test the resistance (ohms) of the rear hitch lower solenoid coil to check for an internal short (resistance significantly lower than OEM specs)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Repair Wiring

If a short to ground was found in the harness during diagnostics, repair the damaged wire or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace the Solenoid/Valve

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the faulty rear hitch lower solenoid from the electro-hydraulic control valve block and install a new one.

  4. Reassemble and Power On

Reconnect the battery and turn the key switch ON.

  5. HCU Calibration

Have your John Deere dealer calibrate the rear hitch system as soon as possible to clear calibration faults (such as 521002.07 or 521002.11) that often accompany valve replacement.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Rear Hitch Lower Solenoid / Electro-Hydraulic Hitch Control Valve

Fitment varies heavily by tractor series. Must be matched to the specific machine's hydraulic pump and rockshaft assembly.

  • Hitch and Selective Control Valve Controller (HCU)

    RE243738

Fits 5M series tractors. Only replace the HCU if the wiring and solenoid test perfectly fine and the module itself is proven to be internally shorted.
