John Deere 521214.09 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Immobilizer Control Device Fault
Issue description
Key Authentication or Control unit Authentication failed or Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from EIC Control Software. The ECU expects an enable signal from the immobilizer; if missing, incorrect, or authentication fails, the engine shuts off.

Check the cause
Verify the operator is using the correct immobilizer key (chipped, slightly thicker than conventional keys).
Ensure the key is not being held in the ELX (start) position for more than 2 seconds while the engine is running.
Check that the voltage supply to the engine control unit, cab control unit, and immobilizer control unit is stable and within specifications.
Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the EIC and the ECU for continuity, shorts, or missing terminating resistors using a multimeter or CAN sniffer tool.
Repair steps
System Reset (Wrong Key Lockout)
If the system was triggered by attempting to start the tractor with the wrong key by mistake, insert a valid, programmed immobilizer key into the ignition. Switch the ignition to the ON position but DO NOT START the engine. Wait at least 3 seconds for the modules to authenticate, then attempt to start the engine.
Wiring Repair
If the key reset does not work, inspect the wiring harnesses connecting the immobilizer control unit to the CAN bus and ECU. Repair or replace any corroded pins, broken wires, or faulty connectors.
Module Replacement
If the wiring is intact and voltage is present but the EIC cannot communicate with the ECU, the immobilizer control unit or antenna ring may have failed internally and must be replaced.
Clear Codes
After resolving the communication issue or replacing the module, cycle the tractor's power and reset the ECU using a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code and restore full engine functionality. (Note: If a new immobilizer module or keys are installed, they will need to be programmed/taught to the tractor by a John Deere dealer).
