John Deere 521214.14 – ECU: VIN Information Mismatch / Immobilizer Control Device Fault
Issue description
A data transfer problem or mismatch between the Engine Interface Controller (EIC) and the Engine Control Unit (ECU) control software. The VIN programmed into the ECU does not match the VIN in the EIC, or the ECU is failing to receive the necessary CAN Bus enable signal from the immobilizer/EIC, resulting in an engine shutoff.

Check the cause
Cycle power by turning the tractor off and back on to see if the communication error was a temporary glitch
Inspect CAN Bus wiring and connections physically for damaged, frayed, or loose wiring and connectors between the EIC and the ECU
Test CAN Bus communication using a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to ensure there are no physical interruptions in data transfer
Verify VIN programming in both the ECU and the EIC software parameters to ensure the Vehicle Identification Numbers match exactly (especially if a module was recently replaced or flashed)
Repair steps
Resolve Wiring Issues
If the diagnostic checks reveal high resistance, frays, or loose pins in the CAN Bus harness between the ECU and EIC, repair or replace the affected wiring harness sections.
Reprogram Modules
If a module was recently replaced, use John Deere Service ADVISOR to input the correct VIN into the new ECU or EIC so that both modules broadcast the same identification data.
Replace Faulty Module
If the wiring is intact and the modules refuse to communicate or accept programming (e.g., the EIC is failing to send the immobilizer enable signal), replace the faulty EIC or ECU.
Reset and Verify
After repairing the wiring, reprogramming, or replacing a module, reset the ECU to clear the 521214.14 fault code. Start the engine and monitor the system to ensure the immobilizer disengages and normal operation resumes.
