John Deere 521408.09 – HCC: Rear Hitch Return to Lower Switch Message Missing

The FMI "09" indicates an abnormal update rate or "Message Missing." This means the control module is no longer receiving the expected communication signal from the rear hitch return-to-lower switch. This is typically caused by a disconnected switch, a severed wire in the harness, a corroded connector, or a complete internal failure of the switch itself.

   Cycle the power by turning the key switch off, waiting 30 seconds, and turning it back on to rule out a temporary CAN bus interruption

   Inspect the physical condition of the Return to Lower / Saved Depth switch to ensure the button is not physically stuck or damaged

   Disconnect the switch and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins

   Test the continuity of the wiring harness between the switch connector and the HCC module using a multimeter, looking for open circuits or shorts to ground

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the Switch

   Carefully pry up the bezel or remove the retaining screws for the switch panel where the Return to Lower switch is housed.

   Remove the Switch

   Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch. Depress the retaining tabs on the sides of the switch body to push it out of the panel.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If your diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, splice in a new section of wire or replace the pigtail connector using John Deere approved weather-sealed heat shrink connectors.

   Install the New Switch

   Snap the new OEM switch into the panel and securely plug in the electrical connector. Ensure the locking tab clicks into place.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reinstall the switch panel, reconnect the battery, and turn the key to the ON position. Clear the stored 521408.09 fault code via the CommandCenter display and test the hitch return-to-lower function to verify the repair.
