John Deere 521421.09 – HCC: Rear Hitch Encoder Lower Message Missing

The control module is no longer receiving the position signal (specifically the "lower" or descent data) from the rear hitch position encoder. This is typically caused by a wiring fault, a disconnected sensor, a failed encoder, or a communication bus failure isolating the sensor from the module.

   Inspect the rear hitch encoder and its physical linkage to ensure it is not bent, broken, or disconnected.

   Disconnect the harness at the rear hitch encoder and the HCC to inspect for pushed-back pins, corrosion, moisture, or debris.

   Verify that the encoder is receiving proper reference voltage (5V or 12V) and a solid ground.

   Perform a continuity test on the signal/communication wires between the encoder and the HCC to rule out an open circuit.

   Check for shorts to ground or shorts to power on the signal circuit.

   If multiple HCC codes are present simultaneously (e.g., 521422.09), check for a shared ground, shared power supply, or a main harness failure.

   Power Down

   Turn off the key switch and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   If diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

   Encoder Replacement

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the rear hitch encoder. Unbolt the encoder linkage from the rockshaft arm. Remove the mounting bolts securing the encoder to the chassis and remove the unit. Install the new encoder, taking care to align the mechanical linkage exactly as specified in the service manual to prevent over-travel. Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and clear the stored fault codes. You must perform a Rear Hitch Calibration via the CommandCenter display so the HCC can learn the new encoder's minimum and maximum voltage/position limits.
