John Deere 521422.09 – HCC (Hitch Control Center): Rear Hitch Encoder Raise Message Missing
Issue description
A communication failure where the Hitch Control Center (HCC) is expecting a specific position/command message from the Rear Hitch Encoder via the LIN BUS network, but the message is missing or not being received. This typically disables the position control of the rear hitch.

Check the cause
Cycle the tractor's key switch to see if the code clears, as temporary voltage drops can trigger HCC communication codes.
Verify system voltage to ensure the tractor is not experiencing low voltage issues, which can cause modules to drop off the LIN BUS.
Locate the Rear Hitch Encoder, disconnect the connector, and inspect for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Using a multimeter, verify that the encoder is receiving proper reference voltage and ground.
Perform a continuity test on the LIN BUS communication wire between the Rear Hitch Encoder and the HCC module to rule out an open circuit or a short to ground.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the engine and remove the key.
Wiring Repair
If the continuity test reveals a break or high resistance in the LIN BUS wire between the encoder and the HCC, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector pigtail.
Replace the Encoder
If the wiring, power, and ground to the encoder are all intact but the HCC still reports a missing message, the internal circuitry of the Rear Hitch Encoder has failed. Remove the mounting hardware securing the encoder to the hitch linkage and install a new unit.
HCC Module Verification
In rare cases where a new encoder does not restore communication, the HCC module itself may have a faulty LIN BUS transceiver. (Note: HCC modules often require dealer programming if replaced).
Calibration & Clearing
After replacing the encoder or repairing the harness, clear the diagnostic trouble codes. You may need to cycle the hitch through its full range of motion three times to purge the system and restore position control.
