521422.19

John Deere 521422.19 – HCC: Rear Hitch Encoder Raise Fault

Issue description

The control unit is detecting an out-of-range signal, erratic data, or a mechanical/electrical failure from the rear hitch position sensor (rockshaft position sensor) when the hitch is commanded to move.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the rockshaft position sensor (rear hitch encoder) located at the rear hitch assembly. Check the sensor linkage arm and mounting bracket for physical damage, bending, or disconnection.

  2. Check the wiring harness leading from the HCC to the hitch position sensor. Look for chafed wires, moisture in the connector, or bent pins.

  3. Verify the potentiometer/sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage and that the signal wire provides a smooth, linear voltage change as the hitch is manually raised and lowered.

  4. Look for accompanying codes like 521422.31 (Rear Hitch Encoder Raise Data Fault) or 521421.19 (Rear Hitch Encoder Lower Fault), which further confirm a sensor failure.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Tension

Lower the rear hitch completely to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure and mechanical tension on the rockshaft.

  2. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits.

  3. Locate the Sensor

Find the rockshaft position sensor at the rear of the tractor, attached to the rockshaft/hitch assembly.

  4. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.

  5. Remove Hardware

Unbolt the sensor bracket and disconnect the mechanical linkage arm connecting the sensor to the rockshaft.

  6. Install New Part

Install the new position sensor and reattach the linkage arm. Ensure the linkage moves freely and is not binding.

  7. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the new sensor.

  8. Calibration

Power on the tractor. Navigate to the CommandArm / CommandCenter display and perform the Rear Hitch Calibration procedure. The HCC must learn the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new sensor to accurately control the hitch depth and height limits.
