John Deere 521422.31 – HCC: Rear Hitch Encoder Raise Data Fault
Issue description
The Hitch Control Controller (HCC) is receiving invalid, erratic, or missing data from the rear hitch position encoder (sensor) during raising or lowering operations. This prevents the controller from accurately determining the physical height/position of the rear hitch.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the HCC and the rear hitch position encoder for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage and has a solid ground.
Look for accompanying codes such as HCC 001873.13 (Rear Hitch Position Sensor requires calibration) or HCC 001873.04 (Circuit Voltage Low), which can help isolate if the issue is a hard electrical failure or just a lost calibration.
Attempt to run the rear hitch calibration procedure via the CommandCenter display before replacing parts.
Repair steps
Harness Repair
If diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or corroded connector pins at the rear hitch encoder, repair the harness or replace the connector pigtail.
Sensor Replacement
If the wiring is intact, the reference voltage is correct, and the sensor will not take a calibration, the encoder itself has failed internally and must be replaced.
Mandatory Calibration
After replacing the rear hitch position sensor, you must perform a rear hitch calibration using the tractor's monitor/CommandCenter. The hitch will not function properly, and codes will persist until the new sensor's upper and lower limits are learned by the HCC.
