Check the cause
Power cycle the key switch and tractor power to see if the communication glitch clears on its own
Verify the tractor's system voltage, as low supply voltage to the rear control unit can cause communication dropouts
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Rear Hitch Load Depth Encoder and the HCC module for incompatible locations, wire connector faults, corrosion, or physical damage
Check for companion codes (such as HCC 521475.19 or HCC 521475.31) that might indicate a hard failure of the sensor rather than just a wiring issue
Repair steps
Safely Park and Power Down
Turn off the engine, reduce electrical loads, and disconnect battery power if probing the harness.
Inspect Fuses
Check the fuses supplying power to the HCC and rear hitch components.
Test Continuity
Disconnect the harness at the Load Depth Encoder and at the HCC. Use a multimeter to test for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power on the signal/communication lines.
Clean and Reconnect
If no wiring damage is found, clean the connector pins with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect securely.
Replace the Encoder
If the wiring is intact but the 'Message Missing' code persists (or is accompanied by data faults), the encoder's internal communication circuitry has likely failed. Replace the Rear Hitch Load Depth Encoder.
Recalibrate
After replacing hitch sensors or encoders, perform a Rear Hitch Calibration procedure via the CommandCenter display to prevent calibration codes (e.g., HCC 523950.13).
Parts you might need
(1)Rear Hitch Load Depth Encoder
Ensure the encoder matches the specific hitch configuration (e.g., standard vs. heavy-duty lift capacity) for the 8R or 9RT series tractor being serviced.
