John Deere 521475.31 – HCC: Rear Hitch Load Depth Encoder Increase Data Fault
Issue description
The controller is receiving erratic, out-of-range, or invalid data from the encoder responsible for monitoring the rear hitch's load depth increase.
Applies to these machines

- 6120R
- 6130R
- 6145R
- 6155R
- 6175R
- 6195R
- 6215R
- 9470RT
- 9520RT
- 9570RT
- 8245R through 8400R
Check the cause
Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes such as 521475.09 (Message Missing) or 521475.19 (Increase Fault) which can help isolate if the issue is a complete circuit failure or just a data anomaly.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the Rear Hitch Load Depth Encoder and its mechanical linkage for physical damage, binding, or debris buildup that could cause erratic readings.
Wiring and Connector Check: Inspect the wiring harness between the Load Depth Encoder and the HCC. Look for chafed wires, moisture in the connectors, or bent/corroded pins.
Voltage/Ground Verification: Verify that the encoder is receiving the correct reference voltage and has a solid ground connection from the HCC.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Clean contacts
Disconnect the harness at the Rear Hitch Load Depth Encoder and clean the contacts with electronic contact cleaner. Reconnect and test to see if the code clears.
Repair wiring
If wiring is damaged, repair the affected section of the harness leading to the HCC.
Remove faulty encoder
If the wiring and connections test good but the data fault persists, remove the faulty Rear Hitch Load Depth Encoder.
Install new encoder
Install the new encoder and ensure the mechanical linkage is properly aligned.
Clear fault codes
Connect the John Deere Service Advisor tool to clear the stored fault codes.
Perform calibration
Perform the rear hitch calibration procedure via the Service Advisor or the tractor's command center to ensure the HCC learns the new encoder's parameters.
Parts you might need
(1)Rear Hitch Load Depth Encoder (or Hitch Draft/Depth Sensor)
Ensure the part is matched to the specific series (e.g., 8R vs. 9RT) as linkage and connector styles may vary between the wheeled and track tractor chassis.
