521476.09

John Deere 521476.09 – HCC (Hitch Control Controller): Rear Hitch Height Limit Encoder Increase Message Missing

Issue description

The control module is not receiving the expected LIN BUS communication signals from the rear hitch adjustment dials (specifically the Height Limit encoder, though it often affects the entire pod containing the Rate of Drop and Depth dials) located on the CommandARM.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 8R Series
  • 8RT Series
  • 8RX Series
  • 8245R
  • 8260R
  • 8295R
  • 8400R
  • 9RT Series
  • 9470RT
  • 9520RT
  • 9570RT

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes (e.g., HCC 521477.09 or HCC 521478.09) which indicate the entire control pod has likely lost power, ground, or LIN BUS connection

  2. Remove the storage compartment cover on the CommandARM and inspect the wiring harness for the hitch adjustment knobs for chafing, pinched wires, or breaks

  3. Disconnect the plug at the hitch control pod/encoder and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals

  4. Use a multimeter to verify the encoder pod is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground connection

  5. Test the continuity of the LIN BUS communication wire from the CommandARM pod down to the HCC (Rear Chassis Module)

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Open the CommandARM control storage compartment and remove the protective cover/trim panel that houses the rear 3-point hitch adjustment knobs (Rate of Drop, Hitch Height Limit, and Depth Control).

  3. Carefully lift the control pod assembly out of the armrest bracket.

  4. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the bottom of the encoder pod.

  5. Remove the mounting screws securing the encoder module to the trim panel.

  6. Install the new hitch control encoder pod and secure it with the mounting screws.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks firmly into place.

  8. Reinstall the CommandARM cover and trim pieces.

  9. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 521476.09 fault code.

  10. Test the rear hitch operation using the dials to ensure finite positioning and communication have been restored.
