John Deere 521476.31 – HCC (Hitch Control Controller / Rear Chassis Module): Rear Hitch Height Limit Encoder Increase Data Fault
Issue description
Communication or data error on the LIN BUS network between the CommandARM hitch control pod and the control module. The module is receiving erratic, missing, or out-of-range data specifically from the encoder that monitors the rear hitch height limit dial.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying LIN BUS or HCC codes (such as 521477.xx for Load Depth or 521478.xx for Drop Rate). If multiple dials are flagging codes simultaneously, the issue is likely a shared LIN BUS wire failure or a complete pod failure rather than a single bad encoder.
Access the wiring harness beneath the CommandARM console and inspect the connector going to the hitch control pod for bent pins, corrosion, or pushed-back terminals.
Using a multimeter, test the LIN BUS communication circuit between the hitch control pod connector and the HCC (Rear Chassis Module) for continuity, high resistance, or shorts to ground/power.
Verify the hitch control pod is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Control Pod
Remove the necessary trim panels on the CommandARM to access the underside of the hitch control dials.
Disconnect the Harness
Unplug the electrical connector from the hitch control pod.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or break in the LIN BUS wire between the CommandARM and the HCC, repair the damaged section of the harness and repin the connector if necessary.
Replace the Control Pod
If the wiring and voltages test within specification, the internal encoder for the height limit dial has failed. Remove the mounting screws securing the hitch control pod to the console and install the replacement unit.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Reconnect the electrical harness, reinstall the CommandARM trim panels, and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Turn the key to the ON position. Use the tractor's CommandCenter display or John Deere Service ADVISOR to clear the stored HCC 521476.31 fault code. Perform a rear hitch calibration procedure to ensure the HCC recognizes the sweep of the new dials.
Parts you might need
(2)Rear Hitch Control Pod / Dial Assembly
Contains the Rate of Drop, Depth, and Lift Upper Limit encoders
Rear Chassis Module (HCC)
Only replace if the module itself fails to output LIN BUS voltage, which is rare for this specific code
