John Deere 521542.03 – RLC (Roof Lighting Control / Cab Roof Module): Rear Roof Warning (NA Only) or Rear Corner Roof Light (Eur Only) Left Voltage High

The control module is detecting a higher-than-expected voltage on the output pin dedicated to the left rear outer roof light. This condition is typically caused by a short-to-power in the wiring harness, a failed light assembly feeding voltage back into the circuit, or an internal short within the control module itself.

   Check the left rear outer roof light housing for physical damage, water intrusion, or melted plastic.

   Disconnect the light assembly and inspect the harness connector and the RLC module connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture.

   Swap the left rear outer light assembly with the right rear outer light assembly, clear codes, and turn lights on to see if the fault shifts to the right side (indicating a faulty light assembly).

   With the light and RLC module disconnected, use a multimeter to measure voltage on the signal wire for the left rear light. If 12V is present, the harness is shorting to a constant power wire.

   Safely Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Components

   Gain access to the rear roof lighting harness and the RLC module (located in the cab roof load center).

   Repair the Harness (If shorted)

   If your multimeter test revealed a short to power, trace the harness from the roof corner back to the RLC. Look for pinch points near the cab roof mounting bolts or hinges. Splice and heat-shrink the damaged wire, or replace the affected roof harness sub-section.

   Replace the Light (If faulty)

   If the swap test proved the light was the culprit, install a new OEM work light/warning light assembly into the left rear roof socket and plug in the connector.

   Replace the RLC Module (If harness and light are good)

   If the harness tests perfectly and the light is not the issue, the RLC module has suffered an internal hardware failure on that specific pin. Unplug the multi-pin connectors from the RLC, unbolt the module from the roof load center, and install the replacement module.

   Reassembly and Testing

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on, clear the stored RLC 521542.03 code via the cab CommandCenter display, and activate the work lights to verify the repair.
