521550.05

John Deere 521550.05 – Vehicle Load Center (VLC): Front Outer Hood Flood Lights Right Circuit Current Low

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical current draw on the circuit for the right-hand front outer hood work light/flood light is lower than expected. This typically indicates an open circuit, which is most commonly caused by a blown bulb, a disconnected harness, or high resistance in a connector.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the key switch (turn the tractor off and back on) to verify if the fault is active, as many VLC codes can be cleared this way.

  2. Visually inspect the right front outer hood flood light for a burnt-out bulb or dead LED array.

  3. Disconnect the harness at the right front outer hood light and check pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals causing high resistance.

  4. Use a multimeter to check for 12V power and a solid ground at the connector when the work lights are turned on. If power is present but the light is off, the bulb is bad. If power is missing, there is a wiring issue.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and ensure the lighting circuit is unpowered.

  2. Access the Light

Open the tractor hood to access the rear of the front right outer flood light assembly.

  3. Disconnect the Harness

Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the light.

  4. Clean Contacts

Spray the connector with electrical contact cleaner and apply a small amount of dielectric grease to prevent future moisture intrusion.

  5. Replace the Bulb/Assembly

If the bulb is blown, remove the retaining hardware or twist-lock mechanism holding the bulb/sealed beam in place. Install the new bulb or LED assembly.

  6. Reassemble and Test

Plug the harness back in, turn the key switch to the ON position, and activate the work lights.

  7. Clear Codes

Verify that the light illuminates. The VLC 521550.05 code should move from "Active" to "Stored" and can be cleared via the CommandCenter display.

  8. Wiring Trace (If Unresolved)

If the new bulb does not fix the issue, trace the wiring harness back to the Vehicle Load Center (VLC) looking for pinched wires, rodent damage, or chafing causing an open circuit.
