John Deere 521554.03 – Cab Roof Module (RLC): High Voltage Detected at The Grab Rail Work Light Pin On The Module When The Lights Are Turned On
Issue description
The ".03" Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) in the J1939 standard means "Voltage Above Normal, Or Shorted To High Source". When the module sends power to the grab rail work light, it monitors the circuit's voltage drop. If the voltage remains unexpectedly high at the module's pin, it means the current is not flowing through the load (the light) as intended. This is almost always caused by an open circuit—such as a blown bulb/LED—or high electrical resistance in a connector preventing proper ground or power flow.

Check the cause
Turn on the work lights and visually inspect the grab rail work light. If it is completely dark or flickering, the bulb or LED diode board is likely blown.
Disconnect the wiring harness at the grab rail work light. Inspect the pins inside the connector for corrosion, moisture intrusion, dirt, or pushed-back pins, which cause high resistance.
Using a multimeter, test the connector on the harness side for 12V power when the lights are switched on. Check the ground pin for continuity to the chassis.
Swap the light with an identical working light on the opposite grab rail. If the fault follows the light, the light assembly is the issue. If the fault stays on the same side, the issue is in the wiring harness leading back to the RLC.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent shorting any circuits while working.
Access the Light
Locate the affected grab rail work light on the cab exterior.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical pigtail connector from the back of the light assembly.
Clean Contacts
If the diagnostic check revealed minor corrosion, spray the connector with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
Replace the Assembly
If the light is blown (common with sealed LED units or older halogen housings), unbolt the mounting hardware securing the light to the grab rail bracket. Mount the new replacement light and tighten the hardware.
Reconnect and Test
Plug the harness back into the new light. Restore battery power, turn the ignition on, and activate the work lights. Verify that the light illuminates and use the tractor's CommandCenter display to confirm the 521554.03 code has moved from "Active" to "Stored" (or clear the code entirely).
