John Deere 521559.03 – RLC (Cab Roof Module / Roof Lighting Controller): Rear Side Roof Flood Light Right Voltage High

Issue description

The controller has detected a higher-than-expected voltage on the circuit supplying power to the right-side rear roof work/flood light. This is typically caused by a short to power in the wiring harness, a faulty light assembly, or an internal fault within the control module.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the right rear roof flood light assembly for physical damage, water intrusion, or melted contacts.

  2. Harness Check: Trace the wiring harness from the RLC (Cab Roof Module) to the right rear roof flood light. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could be shorting to another power source.

  3. Voltage Testing: Disconnect the right rear roof flood light. Turn the machine on and activate the work lights. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the connector pins. If the voltage exceeds the standard system voltage (e.g., 12V-14V nominal), there is a short to power in the harness.

  4. Component Isolation: Swap the right rear roof flood light with the left rear roof flood light (if they are identical parts). If the code changes to the left side (e.g., 521558.03), the light assembly itself is internally shorted. If the code remains 521559.03, the issue is in the wiring or the RLC module.

  5. RLC Pin Test: Disconnect the harness at the RLC module and test the specific pin for the right rear work light for continuity to power.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Components

    Remove the necessary cab roof panels to access the RLC module and the rear work light wiring harness.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If a short to power was found in the harness during diagnostics, cut out the damaged section of wire and splice in a new section using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely.

  4. Replace the Light Assembly

    If the diagnostic isolation test proved the light assembly was internally shorted, unbolt the old right rear roof flood light, plug in the replacement unit, and mount it to the cab roof.

  5. Replace the RLC Module

    If the wiring and light assembly test perfectly, the RLC module has an internal short. Unplug the module, replace it with a new unit, and have a John Deere dealer program the new module to the tractor via Service ADVISOR.

  6. Reassembly and Testing

    Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and activate the work lights. Clear the stored 521559.03 fault code and verify that the light operates correctly and the code does not return.
