John Deere 521926.06 – RPM (Direct Drive Range Module / Range Power Module): Range C Solenoid Current Too High
Issue description
The control software has detected that the electrical current draw on the Range C solenoid valve circuit is excessively high. This condition typically indicates a short circuit within the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself. When this code is triggered, the control software reacts by limiting or disabling transmission functions (limp mode) to prevent mechanical damage.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Direct Drive Range Module (RPM) to the transmission's Range C solenoid for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses
Disconnect the Range C solenoid connector and the RPM connector to check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the Range C solenoid coil to check for an internal short (resistance near zero)
With both ends disconnected, test the signal wire for continuity to ground to check for a shorted wiring harness
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Solenoid
Locate the transmission valve body/manifold where the range solenoids are housed (typically on the side or top of the Direct Drive transmission housing).
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)
Clean the area around the Range C solenoid to prevent debris from entering the transmission. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Range C solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt/clip holding the solenoid in place. Pull the old solenoid valve/coil out of the manifold. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid (Low Viscosity HY-GARD). Insert the new solenoid, secure the retaining hardware, and reconnect the electrical plug.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and perform a transmission calibration procedure (often required when replacing transmission control components) to ensure smooth engagement of Range C.
