521926.07

John Deere 521926.07 – Direct Drive Range Module (RPM): Range C Gear Has Not Been Engaged After Several Attempts By The Module

Issue description

When the controller attempts to shift into Range C and fails multiple times, it locks out the gear to prevent mechanical damage. The underlying cause is often electrical, such as the Range C Solenoid Current Too Low.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6115M through 6170M

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor to reset the RPM module and attempt to select the gear again

  2. Use a multimeter to check the resistance and voltage at the Range C shift solenoid for open circuits, frayed wiring, or poor pin connections

  3. Verify the RPM module is not overheating and that the transmission fluid is at the correct level and operating temperature

  4. Inspect the electromagnetic actuators and the Range C/D shift cables for binding or mechanical failure

Repair steps

  1. Drain transmission fluid

Drain the transmission fluid using leakproof containers.

  2. Remove shift cover

Remove the transmission shift cover to access the Direct Drive Clutch Assembly.

  3. Disassemble clutch drum

Disassemble the clutch drum assembly to access the range gears.

  4. Inspect components

Inspect the Range C gear, sleeve, and thrust washer for excessive wear or damage.

  5. Heat bearing cone

If replacing the bearings, use a bearing heater to heat the new taper roller bearing cone. CAUTION: Do not exceed 150°C (300°F) and plan a safe handling procedure to avoid burns.

  6. Install bearing cone

Install the new taper roller bearing cone.

  7. Install Range C gear

Install the Range C gear along with its sleeve and thrust washer.

  8. Reassemble and refill

Reassemble the Direct Drive Clutch Assembly, reinstall the shift cover, and refill the transmission with John Deere approved hydraulic/transmission fluid.
