John Deere 521926.18 – RPM (Direct Drive Range Module): Range C Can Not Be Engaged
Issue description
This diagnostic fault code is generated when the control software detects a failure on the second attempt to shift into Range C. It indicates a timeout or mechanical/hydraulic inability to engage the range. When this occurs, the transmission function becomes limited or disabled, and the operator is prompted to initiate range shifting again.

Check the cause
Check for related solenoid codes (521926.05, 521926.06, 521991.12) which indicate circuit or temperature issues rather than mechanical failure.
Allow the RPM control unit and transmission to cool down if the tractor has been doing heavy shifting, then restart to see if the range engages.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the RPM module to the transmission valve block for chafed wires or loose connector pins at the Range C proportional solenoid.
Check the transmission fluid (Hy-Gard) level and filter condition, as low fluid or clogged filters can cause hydraulic timeouts during shifts.
Repair steps
Clear and Calibrate
Clear the inactive fault codes. Attempt to perform a transmission calibration via the CommandCenter display. If the calibration fails specifically on Range C, proceed to hardware checks.
Test the Range C Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block. Swap the Range C solenoid with another range solenoid (e.g., Range B). If the fault code changes to the new range (e.g., Range B cannot be engaged), the solenoid is faulty and must be replaced. If the fault remains on Range C, the issue is either in the wiring harness or internal to the transmission.
Test the Wiring
Use a multimeter to check for continuity and verify there is no short to ground between the RPM module connector and the Range C solenoid connector.
Internal Transmission Inspection
If the solenoid and wiring are fully functional, the fault code indicates a mechanical failure (Code 521926.07 is often a companion code for mechanical failure). The transmission range box will require a teardown to inspect the Range C synchronizer, shift forks, and electromagnetic actuators for wear, binding, or damage.
