John Deere 521927.06 – RPM (Control Unit for Range Shifting): Range B Solenoid Current Too High
Issue description
The transmission control software detects that the electrical current value at the Range B solenoid is abnormally high. This condition typically indicates a shorted circuit within the solenoid coil itself or in the wiring harness leading to it.

Check the cause
Wiring Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness leading from the RPM control unit to the Range B solenoid. Look for pinched wires, melted insulation, or chafing that could cause a short to ground or a short to voltage.
Connector Check: Disconnect the Range B solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.
Solenoid Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the Range B solenoid. A reading of zero or near-zero ohms confirms the solenoid coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.
Power Supply Verification: Verify that the RPM control unit is receiving a stable power supply, as voltage irregularities can sometimes trigger false current spikes.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission valve body on the DirectDrive transmission where the range shift solenoids are housed. Identify the specific solenoid for Range B.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the Range B solenoid.
Wiring Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire and use heat-shrink tubing to seal it.
Remove the Solenoid (If Faulty)
If the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining bolt/bracket holding the solenoid in the valve body. Carefully pull the solenoid out. Be prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new Range B solenoid with clean transmission hydraulic fluid. Insert it into the valve body and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid, ensuring it clicks and locks securely.
Test and Clear
Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to clear the RPM 521927.06 fault code.
Operational Check
Test drive the tractor, shifting through the ranges to ensure Range B engages smoothly and the code does not return.
