Issue description

Check the cause

  2. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the Gear 8 solenoid coil and compare to OEM specifications (an 'OL' or unusually high reading confirms internal coil failure)

  3. Check the continuity of the power and ground wires between the GPM harness connector and the solenoid connector to rule out a broken wire in the harness

  4. Ensure the GPM control software is up to date, as outdated software can sometimes trigger false current faults

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key. Allow the transmission fluid to cool.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the DirectDrive transmission control valve block (typically mounted on the side or top of the transmission housing). Identify the specific solenoid corresponding to Gear 8.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the Gear 8 solenoid.

  4. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid valve block with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic system.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    Remove the retaining bolts or snap rings holding the solenoid in place. Carefully pull the faulty solenoid valve out of the valve block. Have a rag ready to catch any residual hydraulic fluid.

  6. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean John Deere transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the bore and secure it with the retaining hardware, torquing to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Connect a diagnostic tool (such as John Deere Service ADVISOR or Jaltest) to clear the 521928.05 fault code. Start the tractor, check for leaks, and perform a test drive to ensure Gear 8 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
