John Deere 521928.06 – GPM: Gear 8 Solenoid Current Too High
Issue description
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated when the control software detects that the electrical current value at the solenoid for Gear 8 is abnormally high. This condition typically indicates a short circuit in the system, which is usually caused by damaged wiring, a faulty solenoid coil, or an internal module fault.

Check the cause
Trace the wiring harness from the GPM to the transmission valve block. Look for pinched wires, chafing, melted insulation, or exposed copper that could be shorting to the tractor's chassis (ground) or another power wire.
Disconnect the harness at the Gear 8 solenoid and at the GPM. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals that could bridge the circuit.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the terminals of the Gear 8 solenoid coil. An abnormally low resistance reading indicates the coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.
With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key on and check if the code changes from 'Current Too High' (short) to 'Current Too Low' (open). If it does, the short is inside the solenoid. If the code remains 'Current Too High', the short is in the wiring harness or the GPM itself.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the Direct Drive transmission control valve block and identify the specific solenoid responsible for Gear 8.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the Gear 8 solenoid.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring, splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, or replace the transmission harness section.
Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)
If the solenoid coil is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the old coil off. (If the entire valve is being replaced, clean the surrounding area, unthread the valve cartridge from the block, and install the new one).
Installation
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid, ensuring the weather seal clicks firmly into place.
Testing
Reconnect the battery. Use a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool (or equivalent scanner) to clear the GPM 521928.06 fault code. Start the tractor and perform a test drive, shifting through the ranges to ensure Gear 8 engages smoothly without triggering the code.
