John Deere 521928.07 – GPM (Gear Shift Module Direct Drive): Gear 8 Has Not Been Engaged After Several Attempts By The Module. Gear Now Unavailable. Restart Tractor To Try And Select Gear.
Issue description
This diagnostic trouble code is generated when the control software fails to engage the 8th gear after multiple attempts. Specifically, diagnostic documentation indicates this code is triggered if the control software detects that the electrical current value of the gear's solenoid valve is too high, which strongly points to a short circuit in the solenoid or its wiring. To protect the transmission, the module locks out the gear and makes it unavailable until the machine is restarted.

Check the cause
Restart the tractor to see if the gear can be successfully selected. The GPM temporarily disables the gear after failed attempts; a restart resets this lockout.
Use a multimeter to test the wiring harness between the GPM and the transmission's Gear 8 solenoid. Look for wires shorting to ground or shorting to power.
Test the resistance of the Gear 8 solenoid coil. An internally shorted coil will pull excessive amperage, triggering the 521928.07 code.
Check the GPM and transmission solenoid block connectors for moisture, corrosion, or melted pins that could bridge the circuits.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage while servicing the transmission modules.
Access the Solenoid Block
Locate the Direct Drive transmission control valve/solenoid block on the side of the transmission housing.
Inspect and Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the chafed/damaged wire insulation or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Solenoid
If the Gear 8 solenoid coil failed the resistance test (indicating an internal short), remove the retaining nut/hardware holding the coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off and install the new replacement solenoid coil.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery. Start the tractor and shift through the gears to verify that Gear 8 engages smoothly. The code should move from 'Active' to 'Stored' and can be cleared using a diagnostic tool.
