Issue description

The control software detects that the electrical current (amperage) flowing through the Gear 6 Solenoid coil is abnormally high. This condition typically points to a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running between the GPM and the Gear 6 Solenoid for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could be shorting to the tractor's chassis (ground).

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Gear 6 Solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals that could bridge the connection and cause a short.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the Gear 6 Solenoid coil. If the resistance reading is extremely low or shows continuity to the solenoid housing, the coil is internally shorted.

  4. With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key ON and check the harness side for a short to ground using a multimeter. If a short is present, the wiring must be repaired.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the transmission valve body and identify the Gear 6 Solenoid.

    Refer to the specific OEM service manual for the exact location on the Direct Drive valve block.

  3. Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid.

    This prevents dirt or debris from contaminating the transmission fluid.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Gear 6 Solenoid.

  5. Remove the retaining bolt, bracket, or snap ring securing the solenoid to the valve body.

  6. Carefully pull the faulty solenoid out of the transmission valve body.

  7. Lubricate the O-rings on the new replacement solenoid with clean John Deere transmission fluid.

  8. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body, ensuring it seats fully, and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  9. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  10. Clear the fault code and test drive the tractor.

    Use a John Deere Service ADVISOR diagnostic tool (or cycle the key, if applicable) to verify that Gear 6 engages properly and the code does not return.
