521930.18

John Deere 521930.18 – GPM: Gear 6 Can Not Be Engaged

Issue description

The transmission control system is attempting to shift into 6th gear but is mechanically or electrically unable to complete the shift.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R

Check the cause

  1. Read ECU Memory: Use a diagnostic tool like John Deere Service Advisor or Jaltest to read the ECU failure memory, view the values of the different sensors connected to the GPM, and perform direct component tests on the transmission solenoids.

  2. Wiring & Harness Test: Clear the diagnostic trouble codes, then wiggle the wiring harness and connections to the Gear 6 solenoid while watching the diagnostic tool to see if the code returns.

  3. Pin Resistance Check: Use a Connector Adapter Test Kit (such as John Deere tool JT07328) to check the connection between the harness and the solenoid. There should be moderate resistance.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Codes

Begin by clearing the diagnostic trouble codes to verify if the fault is active or stored.

  2. Inspect Wiring

Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission clutch manifold and the Gear 6 solenoid for chafing, shorts, or high-current faults.

  3. Replace Solenoid/Component

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the direct diagnostic test, the Gear 6 solenoid must be replaced.

  4. Access the Valve Block

Drain the transmission fluid if necessary and access the transmission clutch manifold. Remove the faulty solenoid and install the new replacement.

  5. Reassembly

When reassembling the transmission components, use a new Direct Drive transmission gasket.

  6. Fluid & Filter Maintenance

It is highly recommended to replace the hydraulic oil filter and refill the transmission with approved fluid (e.g., John Deere Hy-Gard).

  7. Calibration

After replacing the solenoid or transmission components, use the diagnostic software to calibrate the components to ensure correct operation and smooth shifting.

Parts you might need

(5)
  • Gear 6 Solenoid / Transmission Solenoid Valve Coil

Exact solenoid part numbers vary by specific 6R sub-model and transmission serial number, so verifying with a dealer using the machine's PIN is required.

  • Direct Drive Transmission Gasket

    L224652
  • Transmission Oil Filter (Direct Drive W/O IVT)

    AL221066
  • Transmission Gear Clutch Direct Drive Synchroniser

    AL213992
  • Bush Direct Drive
