John Deere 521931.06 – GPM (Gear Shift Module Direct Drive): Gear 5 Solenoid Current Too High (High Amps On Gear 5 Solenoid Coil)
Issue description
This diagnostic trouble code is generated when the control software detects that the electrical current flowing to the Gear 5 transmission solenoid is abnormally high. This condition typically indicates a short circuit to ground within the wiring harness or an internal short inside the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the GPM to the transmission valve body for pinched, chafed, or melted wires that could be causing a short to ground
Disconnect the electrical connector at the Gear 5 solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins (lower than OEM specifications indicates an internal short)
Ensure the GPM control software is up to date and functioning correctly, as software anomalies can occasionally trigger false current spikes
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block on the Direct Drive transmission where the shift solenoids are housed. Identify the specific solenoid responsible for Gear 5.
Disconnect Wiring
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the Gear 5 solenoid. If you found a short in the wiring during diagnostics, repair the harness using OEM-approved connectors and heat shrink.
Remove the Solenoid
If the solenoid itself failed the resistance test, remove its retaining bolt/bracket. Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body. Have a drain pan ready to catch any residual hydraulic/transmission fluid.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean John Deere Hy-Gard™ transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
Testing
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to clear the 521931.06 fault code. Start the tractor and test the transmission through all gears to ensure Gear 5 engages smoothly without throwing the code again.
