John Deere 521933.06 – GPM (Gear Shift Module): Gear 4 Solenoid Current Too High

The control software detects that the electrical current value at the solenoid for Gear 4 is exceeding normal parameters. This condition typically indicates a short circuit, which could be caused by damaged wiring, a short to ground/power, or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the GPM to the transmission valve block for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to ground or power.

   Disconnect the Gear 4 solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the coil pins. A reading of zero or near-zero ohms indicates an internally shorted coil.

   Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (e.g., Service ADVISOR or Jaltest) to read the ECU failure memory, monitor live sensor values, and perform direct activation tests on the Gear 4 solenoid.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the transmission electrical system.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section using appropriate weatherproof connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely.

   Locate Solenoid

   If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil is internally shorted, locate the Gear 4 solenoid on the DirectDrive transmission control valve block.

   Clean Area

   Clean the area around the valve block to prevent debris from entering the transmission.

   Remove the retaining hardware and carefully extract the faulty solenoid valve.

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect Harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.

   Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear the 521933.06 fault code, and test drive the tractor to ensure Gear 4 engages smoothly without triggering the code or entering a cooling phase.
