John Deere 521935.18 – RPM: Range A Cannot Be Engaged
Issue description
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated when the control software detects that the transmission has failed its second consecutive attempt to engage Range A. It generally points to a mechanical binding, a hydraulic pressure failure, or a solenoid malfunction preventing the physical shift.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- 6110R
- 6120R
- 6130R
- 6145R
- 6155R
- 6175R
- 6195R
- 6215R
Check the cause
Verify the RPM control software is up to date, as software glitches can cause false engagement time-outs.
Check the Range A Solenoid circuit for opens or shorts (look for companion codes like RPM 521935.05 or RPM 521935.06).
Check the transmission hydraulic system for proper fluid levels, adequate pump pressure, and flow to the range engagement actuators.
Repair steps
Clear and retest
Follow operator instructions to clear the code and attempt to engage the range again to rule out a temporary stall or operator error.
Inspect solenoid wiring
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Range A solenoid on the transmission valve body for chafing, damage, or loose connectors.
Test Range A solenoid
Apply direct voltage/resistance testing to the Range A solenoid. If the solenoid is stuck or tests out of specification, replace it.
Inspect transmission mechanism
If the electrical and hydraulic systems are functioning properly, the transmission mechanism itself must be inspected for mechanical failure (e.g., damaged synchronizers, bent shift forks, or clutch pack failures).
Update software
Flash the Direct Drive Range Module (RPM) with the latest John Deere software payload.
