John Deere 521979.06 – PL1 module (Gear Shift Module Direct Drive): Keep-Alive Voltage for Park Lock, Current Too High

This diagnostic trouble code is generated when the control software detects an excessively high current draw in the circuit responsible for the keep-alive voltage of the park lock.    Inspect the wiring harness running from the PL1 (Gear Shift Module) to the park lock actuator/solenoid. Look for rubbed, chafed, or melted wires that could be shorting to the chassis ground or to another wire.

   Disconnect the harness at the PL1 module and the park lock actuator. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or arcing damage.

   Use a multimeter to test the keep-alive voltage circuit for continuity to ground. A dead short to ground will cause the high current draw.

   Check the internal resistance of the park lock actuator/solenoid. If the internal coil is shorted, it will pull excessive amperage and trigger this code.

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent further electrical damage during the repair.

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed or shorted wire in the harness, repair the damaged section using OEM-approved waterproof splices, or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Park Lock Actuator (If Applicable)

   If the actuator solenoid is internally shorted, remove the defective actuator from the transmission housing and install a new one. Ensure any associated gaskets or O-rings are also replaced to prevent transmission fluid leaks.

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool (or compatible scanner) to clear the 521979.06 fault code.
