John Deere 522089.05 – GPM: Low Amps On Gear 1 Solenoid Coil
Issue description
The control software has detected that the electrical current value at the solenoid for Gear 1 is too low. This condition typically indicates an open circuit, which prevents the solenoid from actuating properly. As a safety reaction, the transmission will have limited gear functionality, and Gear 1 may be disabled until the issue is resolved.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading from the GPM to the Gear 1 solenoid. Look for chafed wires, broken lines, or disconnected plugs.
Disconnect the Gear 1 solenoid and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the Gear 1 solenoid itself. If the reading shows infinite resistance (OL), the solenoid coil has failed internally (open circuit) and must be replaced.
If the solenoid tests good, check the continuity of the wiring harness between the solenoid connector and the GPM module to locate the break in the wire.
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Locate solenoid
Locate the Gear 1 solenoid valve on the DirectDrive transmission (typically located on the transmission control valve block/chest).
Disconnect harness
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty Gear 1 solenoid.
Repair wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue (open circuit in harness), repair the broken wire or replace the damaged connector pigtail.
Remove faulty solenoid
If the solenoid coil is internally open (failed resistance test), remove the retaining hardware holding the solenoid valve in place and extract the valve. Be prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid.
Install new solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid and install it into the transmission block.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.
Test and clear codes
Start the tractor, clear the stored GPM fault codes, and test drive the machine to ensure Gear 1 engages properly and the code does not return.
