John Deere 522089.06 – GPM (Gear Shift Module Direct Drive): High Amps On Gear 1 Solenoid Coil
Issue description
The control software detects that the electrical current value at the solenoid for Gear 1 is excessively high. This condition typically indicates a shorted circuit, which could be caused by damaged wiring, a short to ground, or an internally shorted solenoid coil. The system will react by limiting gear functionality to protect the transmission.

Check the cause
Visual Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the GPM controller to the transmission control valve housing. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to ground or a short to power.
Connector Check: Disconnect the Gear 1 solenoid connector. Check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the connections.
Solenoid Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the Gear 1 solenoid coil. If the resistance is near zero (out of OEM spec), the coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.
Harness Continuity Test: With the solenoid and GPM disconnected, test the harness wires for continuity to ground. If a short to ground is found in the harness, the wiring must be repaired.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, engage the park brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve housing on the DirectDrive transmission where the gear shift solenoids are mounted.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Remove the Solenoid
If the wiring is intact and the solenoid is internally shorted, disconnect the electrical plug from the Gear 1 solenoid. Remove the retaining hardware holding the solenoid valve in the transmission housing.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the electrical connector. Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the stored GPM fault codes, and test the transmission by shifting through the gears to ensure Gear 1 engages properly without throwing a code.
