John Deere 522090.05 – Gear Shift Module Direct Drive (GPM): Low Amps On Gear 2 Solenoid Coil

An electrical issue where the current (amperage) flowing through the Gear 2 transmission solenoid coil is below the applicable or expected range. Because the module cannot detect the proper current draw, it may fail to engage Gear 2, eventually locking the gear out and requiring a tractor restart to re-attempt selection.

   Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as John Deere Service Advisor or Jaltest) to read the GPM failure memory and monitor the live values of the transmission sensors connected to the ECU to verify the exact amperage drop.

   Use the diagnostic tool to perform direct manual tests on the system components, specifically commanding the Gear 2 solenoid to actuate, and observe if the low amp reading persists.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the Gear 2 solenoid for open circuits, frayed wires, or severe corrosion that would restrict electrical current.

   Before inspecting the physical transmission valves, ensure the tractor is off and relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system, as escaping high-pressure transmission fluid can cause serious injury.

   Relieve Pressure

   Shut down the engine and relieve all hydraulic and transmission fluid pressure before disconnecting any lines or components.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the Gear Shift Module (GPM) valve block on the Direct Drive transmission and identify the specific solenoid coil for Gear 2.

   Disconnect Electricals

   Unplug the wiring harness connector from the Gear 2 solenoid coil.

   Remove and Replace

   Remove the retaining nut/hardware holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the old coil off and install the replacement solenoid coil.

   Reassemble

   Secure the coil and reconnect the electrical harness.

   Clear and Test

   Clear the fault codes using your diagnostic tool. Restart the tractor and attempt to select the gears. The module will make several attempts to engage the gear; verify that Gear 2 engages smoothly without throwing the code.
