John Deere 522090.06 – GPM (Gear Shift Module Direct Drive): High Amps On Gear 2 Solenoid Coil

The control module has detected excessive electrical current (amperage) on the circuit that controls the Gear 2 solenoid. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted internal solenoid coil, or a failure within the module itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness from the GPM to the Gear 2 solenoid on the transmission valve block for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or areas shorting to the chassis/ground.

   Disconnect the harness at the Gear 2 solenoid and at the GPM to inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.

   Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the pins of the Gear 2 solenoid coil. Near zero or significantly below OEM specifications indicates an internal short.

   Isolate the circuit by unplugging the solenoid and turning the key on to check if the code changes to an Open Circuit code. If the High Amps code persists, the short is in the wiring harness or the GPM itself.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the Direct Drive transmission control valve block and identify the specific solenoid assigned to Gear 2.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the Gear 2 solenoid coil.

   Remove the Coil

   Remove the retaining nut or snap-ring holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off the valve cartridge.

   Install New Part

   Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut/clip.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the new solenoid, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes via the tractor's display monitor, and test drive the machine. Ensure the transmission shifts smoothly into Gear 2 without triggering the 522090.06 code.
