John Deere 522090.18 – GPM (Gear Shift Module Direct Drive): INFORMATION FOR OPERATOR: Gear 2 Cannot Be Engaged
Issue description
The control software's second attempt to engage Gear 2 has failed. This indicates either an electrical failure preventing the solenoid from actuating, or a mechanical issue where the gear (or the previous gear on the same side shaft) is physically stuck.

Check the cause
Check for related electrical fault codes (e.g., High Amps or Low Amps on the Gear 2 Solenoid Coil) indicating a short or open circuit
Check for time-out codes (such as 522090.17) indicating the system took too long to engage the gear on the first attempt
Verify engine speed is not too high, as the system will prevent downshifting to protect the engine
Check for mechanical binding, as the control software may detect that the previous gear on the same side shaft is stuck
Repair steps
Operator Reset
Attempt to re-engage Gear 2 manually. If it fails, restart the tractor to reset the GPM module and attempt to select the gear again.
Electrical Inspection
If the gear remains unavailable, locate the Gear 2 solenoid on the DirectDrive transmission valve block. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
Solenoid Testing
Test the Gear 2 solenoid coil for proper resistance to rule out an internal short or open circuit. Replace the solenoid if it fails electrical testing.
Mechanical Inspection
If the wiring and solenoid are functioning correctly, the issue is internal to the DirectDrive transmission (e.g., a stuck side shaft or mechanical gear failure). This requires a qualified technician to open the transmission, inspect the side shafts, and repair the mechanical binding.
Parts you might need
(3)Gear 2 Solenoid Valve (DirectDrive Transmission)
Controls the hydraulic flow to engage the second gear
DirectDrive Transmission Wiring Harness
Replaced if the harness has an unrepairable short/open circuit
GPM (Gear Shift Module)
Replaced only if the controller itself has failed and cannot send the signal
